Do you want to sell sugared water for the rest of your life, or do you want to come with me and change the world?
That’s what Steve Jobs asked the President of Pepsi when he recruited him to join Apple. That's the question we're now asking you.
We believe you can take your mind, your passions, your ideas, and use them to build your own solutions to the problems you see around you. You don’t need to be the best programmer, designer, or have the perfect business model. All you need is the conviction to trust yourself, decide quickly, and never quit.
We believe you can become a Starter – someone who isn't afraid to create something new, someone who dares to be different. A Starter does work she loves, makes an impact, and gets paid to do it.
Starter School is a nine-month grad school for people who want to learn how to build software and start companies. Among a small class of highly motivated people, you will learn everything you need to build the back-end, design the front-end, and bring your product to market.
You’ll learn the coding skills to become a developer. You’ll learn enough about design to be dangerous. You’ll pick up the business skills necessary to call yourself a product manager. But more importantly you’ll gain the confidence to start something new and make something people want.
Starter School is not a bootcamp, because you are not a code monkey. Instead of being a replaceable cog you will become the designer of your own machine. Starter School will harness your intrinsic motivation so all of your energy is channeled into building an idea you care about.
You will no longer be a consumer of technology, you'll become a creator.
It's not only what you know, it's who you know. At Starter School, you'll gain the community, support, and network that money can't buy. Your teachers are not people who just talk about doing it. They are doing it. They've been starting companies and building products for decades.
You'll learn from founders and CEOs of multi-million dollar businesses. Venture capitalists who've helped hundreds of entrepreneurs run their companies. World-class designers who've built products that have millions of users. Visionaries who've spearheaded political movements. Authors who've written New York Times best-sellers. And much more.
Normally, these people are impossible to get a hold of. In order to talk to them, you have to wait in line after they deliver a keynote speech at a conference. And then, maybe you grab 30 seconds of their time and attention. At Starter School these very people are your teachers, mentors, and your biggest fans. They are rooting for you, taking you out to lunch, and are constantly asking how they can help.
After Starter School you will know how to start a company. You will know how to build a product. And you will be confident in knowing where to go and what to do next.
If your business doesn't succeed your experience will only make you more valuable, employable, and unique. The worst-case scenario is your product fails and you settle for a job. You'll be employable as an entry-level programmer, designer, or product manager. And when you step into that job interview you’ll have more than just a resume with checkboxes next to a set of skills.
You’ll be different. You’ll think different. And you’ll be more valuable and influential to your employer than the competition. You will acquire skills to define your own terms for success.
To get into Starter School you need to be ready to take charge of your life. You need to be passionate about making an idea real with software. You have to be willing to invest the time and energy to learn, no matter how hard it gets.
If you have the passion and energy to do what it takes to make the change you wish to see in your world a reality then Starter School is for you.
It’s time for you to start something new.
Tuition for Starter School is $12,000 per quarter, excluding housing, materials, and personal expenses. A refundable deposit of $3,000 will be required in order to confirm your acceptance.
